During Sunday’s flooding at Audley Weir, emergency services responded to reports of a vehicle caught in floodwaters.
The incident saw the car’s occupant successfully evacuate themselves to safety prior to the arrival of first responders.
The State Emergency Service (SES) has reiterated warnings for motorists to obey road closure signs and seek alternate routes, such as via Waterfall or Otford, during flooding events.
The SES highlighted the deceptive nature of shallow water levels, noting that modern vehicles, particularly smaller models, can become buoyant in just 15 centimeters of water due to design changes aimed at improving fuel efficiency.
This buoyancy can lead to vehicles unexpectedly floating, presenting serious risks in flooded conditions.
